Catena-Poly[[bis-(pyridine-κN)nickel(II)]-μ-oxalato-κO,O:O,O].

ABSTRACT: The title compound, [Ni(C(2)O(4))(C(5)H(5)N)(2)](n), was synthesized under hydro-(solvo)thermal conditions. The Ni(II) atom, lying on a twofold rotation axis, has an octa-hedral coordination geometry involving two N atoms from two pyridine ligands and four O atoms from two oxalate ligands. The Ni atoms are connected by the tetra-dentate bridging oxalate ligands into a one-dimensional zigzag chain.

Project description:The title compound, [Ni(C(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))](n), is isostructural with its Mn(II), Fe(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) analogues. Each Ni(II) atom is chelated by two oxalate ligands and one 2,2'-bipyridine, forming a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry. Oxlate acts as a bridge to link neighbouring pairs of Ni(II) cations, forming a one-dimensional wave-like chain. The crystal showed partial inversion twinning.

The Cu⋯Cu separation through the oxalate bridge is 5.620 (5) Å. Both the Cu atoms and the C-C bond of the oxalate bridge are bis-ected by inversion centres.
