ABSTRACT: In the title complex, [Zn(C(15)H(10)O(6))(H(2)O)(2)](n), the Zn(II) atom is located on a twofold rotation axis and exhibits a distorted tetrahedral coordination environment defined by two O atoms from two 4,4'-(methyl-enedioxy)-dibenzoate ligands and two O atoms from two coordinated water mol-ecules. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked into a three-dimensional framework by O-H?O hydrogen bonds and C-H?? inter-actions.

Project description:The title compound, [Cd(C(14)H(8)O(6)S)(H(2)O)(2)](n), comprises zigzag chains parallel to [111] of alternating [Cd(H(2)O)(2)](2+) and sulfonyl-dibenzoate units, with the Cd and S atoms lying on crystallographic twofold axes. The central Cd(II) ion is in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry, coordinated by six O atoms from two carboxyl-ate groups and two water O atoms. An intra-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bond occurs. In the crystal, inter-molecular hydrogen bonds between carboxyl-ate O atoms and coordinated water mol-ecules in adjacent chains lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network structure. The compound is isotypic with the Zn analog.

In the anionic chain, the Cd atom lies on a center of inversion in an octa-hedral geometry. The midpoint of the coordinated bipyridine also resides on a center of inversion, as does the non-coordinated bipyridinium counterion. O-H?O and N-H?O hydrogen bonding inter-actions and ?-? stacking inter-actions in the structure are responsible for the supra-molecular assembly.

The crystallographic inversion center and glide plane present at the center of the C-C single bond of 4,4'-bipy, along with the cis coordination motif of the 4,4'-bipy, lead to one-dimensional zigzag chains. There are a large number of water mol-ecules in the crystal structure, which also form one-dimensional chains through O-H?O hydrogen bonds.
