ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [Cu(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(4)]C(4)H(4)O(4)·12H(2)O, C(10)H(8)N(2)), the centrosymmetic dinuclear cations, succinate anions and water mol-ecules are hydrogen bonded into layers parallel to (010). The Cu atom is square-pyramidally coordinated by one atom of the succinato ligand and four N atoms of two 2,2'-bipyridine ligands. The 12 water mol-ecules form a new type of water cluster.

Project description:The title compound, [Cu(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4))(C(15)H(11)N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(2)·2H(2)O, was synthesized under hydro-thermal conditions. The dinuclear copper complex is located on a crystallographic inversion centre. The Cu(II) ion is penta-coordinated in a tetra-gonal-pyramidal geometry, with one O atom of a succinate dianion and three N atoms of a 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine ligand occupying the basal plane, and a water O atom located at the apical site. In the crystal structure, O-H?O hydrogen bonding links the mol-ecules into a chain parallel to the a axis.

The asymmetric unit contains a discrete Keggin-type [SiW(12)O(40)](4-) anion (located on a twofold axis), one 4,4'-bipy (located on a twofold axis), two (4,4'-bipyH(2))(2+) cations and six uncoordinated water mol-ecules. The polyoxoanion is constructed from a central SiO(4) tetra-hedron which shares its O atoms with four trinuclear W(3)O(13) groups, each of which is made up of three edge-sharing WO(6) octa-hedra. The water mol-ecules and [SiW(12)O(40)](4-) anions are linked through hydrogen bonds.

In the crystal, the components are linked via inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming layers parallel to (001). Additional stabilization within these layers is provided by ?-? In the crystal, mol-ecules are assembled by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding and π-π inter-actions between bipy groups [centroid-centroid distances = 3.7686 (16) and 3.7002 (16) Å] into a three-dimensional network. Project description:The title compound, [Ni(C(4)H(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)]·7.34H(2)O, was obtained by crystallization from an aqueous ethano-lic reaction mixture containing nickel(II) acetate, maleic acid, bipyridine, sodium hydroxide and ammonia. The asymmetric unit contains one independent complex mol-ecule and 7.34 water mol-ecules occupying eight crystallographically independent positions. Two of these water molecules are disordered. The nickel(II) atom is coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral geometry by two O atoms from one carboxyl-ate group of the maleato ligand and by four N atoms from two 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) ligands. The water mol-ecules, along with the O atoms of the uncoordinated carboxyl-ate group, form an extended hydro-philic three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded system with large cavities in which the hydro-phobic bipy ligands are located. One H atom of the maleate ligand is involved in a weak hydrogen bond of the C-H?O type. Stacking inter-actions between the pyridyl rings of the bipy ligands [centroid-centroid distance = 3.549?(15)?Å] lead to the formation of pairs of complex mol-ecules.
