ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(31)H(7)BF(12)N(6)O, mol-ecules are arranged into one-dimensional columns with an inter-molecular B?B distance of 5.3176?(8)?Å. Bowl-shaped mol-ecules are arranged within the columns in a concave bowl-to-ligand arrangement separated by a ring centroid distance of 3.532?(2)?Å between the benzene ring of the 4-methyl-phen-oxy ligand and one of the three five-membered rings of a symmetry-related mol-ecule.

In the crystal, mol-ecules are arranged in one-dimensional columns and the boron-subphthalocyanine units within each column are offset and angled in a bowl-to-ligand packing arrangement such that the axial Br atom rests in the aromatic concaved bowl of the neighboring subphthalocyanine with an inter-molecular Br?B distance of 3.721?(3)?Å.

In the crystal, pairs of mol-ecules are associated through aromatic ?-? stacking inter-actions between the concave faces of the boronsubphthalocyanine fragments at a centroid-centroid distance of 3.4951?(19)?Å and a weaker inter-action of the same type between the convex faces of the same group [centroid-centroid separation = 3.5669?(18)?Å] also occurs.

Subphthalocyaninato Boron(III) Hydride: Synthesis, Structure and Reactivity.

Project description:Subphthalocyanine (SubPc) chemistry has been limited so far by their high sensitivity toward strong nucleophiles. In particular, the substitution of the axial chlorine atom by a nucleophilic group in the case of less-reactive SubPcs, such as those bearing electron-withdrawing peripheral substituents, presents some limitations and requires harsh conditions. By taking advantage of the electrophilic character of DIBAL-H, it has been possible to prepare for the first time SubPc-hydride derivatives that exhibit high reactivity as hydroboration reagents of aldehydes. This hydride transfer requires using a typical carbonyl activator (trimethylsilyl triflate) and only one equivalent of aldehyde, affording SubPcs with an axial benzyloxy group in good yield. This transformation has proven to be a useful alternative method for the axial functionalisation of dodecafluoroSubPc, a paradigmatic SubPc derivative, by using electrophiles for the first time. Considering the increasing interest in SubPcs as electron-acceptor semiconductors with remarkable absorption in the visible range to replace fullerene in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, it is of the utmost importance to develop new synthetic methodologies for their axial functionalisation.

Project description:The title compound, C(2)H(10)BCl(2)N(2) (+)·Cl(-) or [BCl(2)(H(3)CNH(2))(2)](+)·Cl(-), is the first crystallographically characterized di(alkyl-amine)-BCl(2) (+) salt. The B atom is tetra-hedrally coordinated by two Cl and two methyl-amine N atoms. In the crystal structure, the cations and anions inter-act via N-H?Cl hydrogen bonds (mean H?Cl = 2.40?Å), resulting in a layered structure.

Project description:The main feature of the structure of the title compound, C(30)H(16)BN(7)O(3) or NO(2)PhO-BsubPc, are pairs of mol-ecules linked through ?-inter-actions between the concave faces of the BsubPc fragments at a distance of 3.5430?(11)?Å across an inversion centre. However, the angle between the planes of the five- and six-menbered rings involved in this inter-action is 1.44?(10)°, causing the inter-acting BsubPcs units to be slightly askew rather than parallel as is typical for ?-stacking inter-actions.

Europium (III) Organic Complexes in Porous Boron Nitride Microfibers: Efficient Hybrid Luminescent Material.

Project description:We report the design and synthesis of a novel kind of organic-inorganic hybrid material via the incorporation of europium (III) ?-diketonate complexes (Eu(TTA)3, TTA?=?2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) into one-dimensional (1D) porous boron nitride (BN) microfibers. The developed Eu(TTA)3@BN hybrid composites with typical 1D fibrous morphology exhibit bright visible red-light emission on UV illumination. The confinement of Eu(TTA)3 within pores of BN microfibers not only decreases the aggregation-caused quenching in solid Eu(TTA)3, but also improves their thermal stabilities. Moreover, The strong interactions between Eu(TTA)3 and porous BN matrix result in an interesting energy transfer process from BN host to TTA ligand and TTA ligand to Eu3+ ions, leading to the remarkable increase of red emission. The synthetic approach should be a very promising strategy which can be easily expanded to other hybrid luminescent materials based on porous BN.

The stability of graphene and boron nitride for III-nitride epitaxy and post-growth exfoliation.

Project description:A challenging approach, but one providing a key solution to material growth, remote epitaxy (RE)-a novel concept related to van der Waals epitaxy (vdWE)-requires the stability of a two-dimensional (2-D) material. However, when graphene, a representative 2-D material, is present on substrates that have a nitrogen atom, graphene loss occurs. Although this phenomenon has remained a hurdle for over a decade, restricting the advantages of applying graphene in the growth of III-nitride materials, few previous studies have been conducted. Here, we report the stability of graphene on substrates containing oxygen or nitrogen atoms. Graphene has been observed on highly decomposed Al2O3; however, graphene loss occurred on decomposed AlN at temperatures over 1300 °C. To overcome graphene loss, we investigated 2-D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as an alternative. Unlike graphene on AlN, it was confirmed that h-BN on AlN was intact after the same high-temperature process. Moreover, the overgrown AlN layers on both h-BN/AlN and h-BN/Al2O3 could be successfully exfoliated, which indicates that 2-D h-BN survived after AlN growth and underlines its availability for the vdWE/RE of III-nitrides with further mechanical transfer. By enhancing the stability of the 2-D material on the substrate, our study provides insights into the realization of a novel epitaxy concept.

Fe3O4-Functionalized Boron Nitride Nanosheets as Novel Adsorbents for Removal of Arsenic(III) from Contaminated Water.

Project description:We report the application of Fe3O4-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS-Fe3O4 nanocomposite) for the remediation of As(III) ions from contaminated water. The specific surface area of the nanocomposite has been found as 179.5 m2 g-1. Due to its superparamagnetic nature at room temperature, the nanocomposite can be easily isolated from the solution under an external magnetic field. For As(III) ions, the maximum adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite is obtained as 30.3 mg g-1, which is approximately 4 times more than that of the bare BNNSs (8.5 mg g-1). The results from density functional theory calculations are also in close agreement with experimental findings and show that As(OH)3 binds more (?4 times) efficiently to the BNNS-Fe3O4 nanocomposite than the bare BNNSs, implying a 4 times higher adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite. Especially, it is found that the synthesized nanocomposite could lessen the concentration of As(III) ions from 134 to 2.67 ppb in a solution at 25 °C. On increasing the temperature to 35 °C, the level of As(III) ions could be reduced from 556 to 10.29 ppb, which is close to the limit prescribed by the World Health Organization. The adsorbent was easily separable and showed regeneration properties. These outcomes depict the prospect of using BNNS-Fe3O4 nanocomposites as commercial adsorbents for the removal of As(III) ions from contaminated water.

Hydrophosphination of boron-boron multiple bonds.

Project description:Five compounds containing boron-boron multiple bonds are shown to undergo hydrophosphination reactions with diphenylphosphine in the absence of a catalyst. With diborenes, the products obtained are highly dependent on the substitution pattern at the boron atoms, with both 1,1- and 1,2-hydrophosphinations observed. With a symmetrical diboryne, 1,2-hydrophosphination yields a hydro(phosphino)diborene. The different mechanistic pathways for the hydrophosphination of diborenes are rationalised with the aid of density functional theory calculations.

Ir(iii)-catalyzed <i>ortho</i> C-H alkylations of (hetero)aromatic aldehydes using alkyl boron reagents.

Project description:Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H alkylation reactions directed by aldehydes or ketones have been largely restricted to electronically activated alkenes. Herein, we report a general protocol for the Ir(iii)-catalyzed ortho C-H alkylations of (hetero)aromatic aldehydes using alkyl boron reagents as the coupling partner. Featuring aniline as an inexpensive catalytic ligand, the method was compatible with a wide variety of benzaldehydes, heterocyclic aldehydes, potassium alkyltrifluoroborates as well as a few ?,?-unsaturated aldehydes. An X-ray crystal structure of a benzaldehyde ortho C-H iridation intermediate was also successfully obtained.
