This stands as a significant advance over the previous methods using Pt, Cu or Ag salts paired with ligands in organic solvents such as benzene, acetonitrile or methylene chloride.

Enhancing Metal Separations by Liquid-Liquid Extraction Using Polar Solvents.

Project description:The less polar phase of liquid-liquid extraction systems has been studied extensively for improving metal separations; however, the role of the more polar phase has been overlooked for far too long. Herein, we investigate the extraction of metals from a variety of polar solvents and demonstrate that, the influence of polar solvents on metal extraction is so significant that extraction of many metals can be largely tuned, and the metal separations can be significantly enhanced by selecting suitable polar solvents. Furthermore, a mechanism on how the polar solvents affect metal extraction is proposed based on comprehensive characterizations. The method of using suitable polar solvents in liquid-liquid extraction paves a new and versatile way to enhance metal separations.

Stereodivergent Metal-Catalyzed Allene Cycloisomerizations.

Project description:Metal-catalyzed allene cycloisomerizations provide rapid entry into five-membered carbocyclic frameworks, a common motif in natural products and pharmaceuticals. While both Au(I) and Pd(0)-catalyzed allene cycloisomerizations give 5-endo-dig cyclization, Pd prefers the syn diastereomer in contrast to the anti isomer observed with Au. The change in stereoselectivity is proposed to arise from buildup of A1,3 strain during the key carbopalladation step to furnish the cycloisomerized products in moderate to good dr with yields comparable to Au(I) catalysts.

Salicylaldimine Ruthenium Alkylidene Complexes: Metathesis Catalysts Tuned for Protic Solvents.

Project description:Tuning the electronic and steric environment of olefin metathesis catalysts with specialized ligands can adapt them to broader applications, including metathesis in aqueous solvents. Bidentate salicylaldimine ligands are known to stabilize ruthenium alkylidene complexes, as well as allow ring-closing metathesis in protic media. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of exceptionally robust olefin metathesis catalysts bearing both bidentate salicylaldimine and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, including a trimethylammonium-functionalized complex adapted for polar solvents. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic analysis confirm the structures of the complexes. Although the N-heterocyclic carbene-salicylaldimine ligand combination limits the activity of these catalysts in nonpolar solvents, this pairing enables efficient ring-closing metathesis of both dienes and enynes in methanol and methanol-water mixtures under air.

Paper spray ionization of polar analytes using non-polar solvents.

Ambient ionization is achieved simply by application of a high voltage to the wet paper. Dynamic Interplay between Defective UiO-66 and Protic Solvents in Activated Processes.

Project description:UiO-66, composed by Zr-oxide inorganic bricks [Zr6 (μ3 -O)4 (μ3 -OH)4 ] and organic terephthalate linkers, is one of the most studied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to its exceptional thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability. Thanks to its high connectivity, the material can withstand structural deformations during activation processes such as linker exchange, dehydration, and defect formation. These processes do alter the zirconium coordination number in a dynamic way, creating open metal sites for catalysis and thus are able to tune the catalytic properties. In this work, it is shown, by means of first-principle molecular-dynamics simulations at operating conditions, how protic solvents may facilitate such changes in the metal coordination. Solvent can induce structural rearrangements in the material that can lead to undercoordinated but also overcoordinated metal sites. This is demonstrated by simulating activation processes along well-chosen collective variables. Such enhanced MD simulations are able to track the intrinsic dynamics of the framework at realistic conditions.

Universal electronic structure of polar oxide hetero-interfaces.

Project description:The electronic properties of NdGaO3/SrTiO3, LaGaO3/SrTiO3, and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, all showing an insulator-to-metal transition as a function of the overlayer-thickness, are addressed in a comparative study based on x-ray absorption, x-ray photoemission and resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The nature of the charge carriers, their concentration and spatial distribution as well as the interface band alignments and the overall interface band diagrams are studied and quantitatively evaluated. The behavior of the three analyzed heterostructures is found to be remarkably similar. The valence band edge of all the three overlayers aligns to that of bulk SrTiO3. The near-interface SrTiO3 layer is affected, at increasing overlayer thickness, by the building-up of a confining potential. This potential bends both the valence and the conduction band downwards. The latter one crossing the Fermi energy in the proximity of the interface and determines the formation of an interfacial band offset growing as a function of thickness. Quite remarkably, but in agreement with previous reports for LaAlO3/SrTiO3, no electric field is detected inside any of the polar overlayers. The essential phenomenology emerging from our findings is discussed on the base of different alternative scenarios regarding the origin of interface carriers and their interaction with an intense photon beam.

A Peptide Amphiphile Organogelator of Polar Organic Solvents.

Project description:A peptide amphiphile is reported, that gelates a range of polar organic solvents including acetonitrile/water, N,N-dimethylformamide and acetone, in a process dictated by β-sheet interactions and facilitated by the presence of an alkyl chain. Similarities with previously reported peptide amphiphile hydrogelators indicate analogous underlying mechanisms of gelation and structure-property relationships, suggesting that peptide amphiphile organogel design may be predictably based on hydrogel precedents.

Surface-Grafted Poly(ionic liquid) that Lubricates in Both Non-polar and Polar Solvents.

Project description:We show that a surface-grafted polymer brush, 1-n-butyl-3-vinyl imidazolium bromide-based poly(ionic liquids), is able to reduce the interfacial friction by up to 66% and 42% in dodecane and water, respectively. AFM-based force spectroscopy reveals that the polymer brush adopts distinctively different interfacial conformations: swollen in water but collapsed in dodecane. Minimal surface adhesion was observed with both polymer conformations, which can be attributed to steric repulsion as the result of a swollen conformation in water or surface solvation when the hydrophobic fraction of the polymer was exposed to the dodecane. The work brings additional insight on the polymer lubrication mechanism, which expands the possible design of the polymer architecture for interfacial lubrication and modification.

Broadband fluorescence reveals mechanistic differences in excited-state proton transfer to protic and aprotic solvents.

Project description:Excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) to solvent is often explained according to the two-step Eigen-Weller model including a contact ion pair (CIP*) as an intermediate, but general applicability of the model has not been thoroughly examined. Furthermore, examples of the spectral identification of CIP* are scarce. Here, we report on a detailed investigation of ESPT to protic (H2O, D2O, MeOH and EtOH) and aprotic (DMSO) solvents utilizing a broadband fluorescence technique with sub-200 fs time resolution. The time-resolved spectra are decomposed into contributions from the protonated and deprotonated species and a clear signature of CIP* is identified in DMSO and MeOH. Interestingly, the CIP* intermediate is not observable in aqueous environment although the dynamics in all solvents are multi-exponential. Global analysis based on the Eigen-Weller model is satisfactory in all solvents, but the marked mechanistic differences between aqueous and organic solvents cast doubt on the physical validity of the rate constants obtained.
