Chemoselective reductions of nitroaromatics in water at room temperature.

ABSTRACT: A robust and green protocol for the reduction of functionalized nitroarenes to the corresponding primary amines has been developed. It relies on inexpensive zinc dust in water containing nanomicelles derived from the commercially available designer surfactant TPGS-750-M. This mild process takes place at room temperature and tolerates a wide range of functionalities. Highly selective reductions can also be achieved in the presence of common protecting groups.

Warm Water Versus Room Temperature Water Immersion Colonoscopy

Project description:Water immersion insertion has been documented to decrease procedure-related discomfort during colonoscopy. There was used warm water infusion for colonoscope insertion in most of the water immersion colonoscopy trials. The investigators have been using room temperature water (20-24°C) for water immersion and the investigators did not notice any drawback of it. In our opinion, it is simpler and cheaper option for water immersion colonoscopy and proof of its efficacy and safety could support the use of water immersion technique in routine practice. The primary endpoint is cecal intubation time and the investigators suppose that the use of warm water infusion does not shorten it significantly. Patient comfort during colonoscope insertion, water consumption, length of the scope while reaching the cecum, need for external compression, need for positioning of the patient and endoscopist´s difficulty with colonoscopy will be also assessed.

Chemoselective cyclization of 3-arylamino-2-hydroxy-tetrahydroindol-4-one in water at room temperature.

Project description:A convenient and green protocol is developed for the chemoselective synthesis of indole derivatives by the one-pot, multi-component reaction of 5,5-dimethyl-3-(arylamino)cyclohex-2-enone derivatives (derived from the addition of various anilines to dimedone) with phenylglyoxal monohydrate, and diverse anilines, in water at room temperature. Advantages of this reaction include the availability of starting materials, use of water as a green solvent, catalyst-free approach, simple work-up, high yields, and preparation of potentially bioactive compounds.

Trifluoromethylation of Heterocycles in Water at Room Temperature.

Accurate prediction of ice nucleation from room temperature water.

Project description:Crystal nucleation is one of the most fundamental processes in the physical sciences and almost always occurs heterogeneously with the aid of a nucleating substrate. No example of nucleation is more ubiquitous and impactful than the formation of ice, vital to fields as diverse as geology, biology, aeronautics, and climate science. However, despite considerable effort, we still cannot predict a priori the efficacy of a nucleating agent. Here we utilize deep learning methods to accurately predict nucleation ability from images of room temperature liquid water-generated from molecular dynamics simulations-on a broad range of substrates. The resulting model, named IcePic, can rapidly and accurately infer nucleation ability, eliminating the requirement for either notoriously expensive simulations or direct experimental measurement. In an online poll, IcePic was found to significantly outperform humans in predicting the ice nucleating efficacy of materials. By analyzing the typical errors made by humans, as well as the application of reverse interpretation methods, physical insights into the role the water contact layer plays in ice nucleation have been obtained. Moving forward, we suggest that IcePic can be used as an easy, cheap, and rapid way to discern the nucleation ability of substrates, also with potential for learning other properties related to interfacial water.

pH-Dependence of the Aqueous Phase Room Temperature Bronsted Acid-Catalyzed Chemoselective Oxidation of Sulfides with H₂O₂.

Project description:A pH-dependence of the Brønsted acid-catalyzed oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides with H₂O₂ is reported for the first time based on our systematic investigation of the catalytic performance of a series of Brønsted acids. For all of the Brønsted acids investigated, the catalytic performances do not depend on the catalyst loading (mol ratio of Brønsted acid to substrate), but rather depend on the pH value of the aqueous reaction solution. All of them can give more than 98% conversion and selectivity in their aqueous solution at pH 1.30, no matter how much the catalyst loading is and what the Brønsted acid is. This pH-dependence principle is a very novel perspective to understand the Brønsted-acid catalysis system compared with our common understanding of the subject.

Organocatalysis in water at room temperature with in-flask catalyst recycling.

Geologically-inspired strong bulk ceramics made with water at room temperature.

Project description:Dense ceramic materials can form in nature under mild temperatures in water. By contrast, man-made ceramics often require sintering temperatures in excess of 1,400 °C for densification. Chemical strategies inspired by biomineralization processes have been demonstrated but remain limited to the fabrication of thin films and particles. Besides biomineralization, the formation of dense ceramic-like materials such as limestone also occurs in nature through large-scale geological processes. Inspired by the geological compaction of mineral sediments in nature, we report a room-temperature method to produce dense and strong ceramics within timescales comparable to those of conventional manufacturing processes. Using nanoscale powders and high compaction pressures, we show that such cold sintering process can be realized with water at room temperature to result in centimetre-sized bulk parts with specific strength that is comparable to, and occasionally even higher than, that of traditional structural materials like concrete.
