ABSTRACT: We report an efficient Pd-catalyzed C(sp(2))-H activation/C-O bond formation for the synthesis of ethoxy dibenzooxaphosphorin oxides from 2-(aryl)arylphosphonic acid monoethyl esters under aerobic conditions.

Project description:A continuous-flow synthesis of aziridines by palladium-catalyzed C(sp(3) )-H activation is described. The new flow reaction could be combined with an aziridine-ring-opening reaction to give highly functionalized aliphatic amines through a consecutive process. A predictive mechanistic model was developed and used to design the C-H activation flow process and illustrates an approach towards first-principles design based on novel catalytic reactions.

Palladium-catalyzed ?-arylation of benzylic phosphine oxides.

Project description:A novel approach to prepare diarylmethyl phosphine oxides from benzyl phosphine oxides via deprotonative cross-coupling processes (DCCP) is reported. The optimization of the reaction was guided by High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) techniques. The Pd(OAc)2/Xantphos-based catalyst enabled the reaction between benzyl diphenyl or dicyclohexyl phosphine oxide derivatives and aryl bromides in good to excellent yields (51-91%).

Direct Synthesis of 3-Aryl Substituted Isocoumarins and Phthalides through Palladium Acetate Catalyzed C(sp<sup>2</sup> )-H Activation in Ionic Liquids.

Project description:A novel Pd-catalysed oxidative coupling between benzoic acids and vinylarenes or acrylates to furnish isocoumarins and phthalides is reported. The reaction proceeds smoothly in molten tetrabutylammonium acetate via a selective C-H bond activation, with very low percentage of ligand-free palladium acetate as the catalyst, under atmospheric pressure of oxygen. Sub-stoichiometric amount of copper acetate is also required as a reoxidant for the palladium.

Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of 9-fluorenylidenes through aryne annulation.

Project description:The palladium-catalyzed annulation of arynes by substituted o-halostyrenes produces substituted 9-fluorenylidenes in good yields. This methodology provides this important carbocyclic ring system in a single step, which involves the generation of two new carbon-carbon bonds, occurs under relatively mild reaction conditions, and tolerates a variety of functional groups, including cyano, ester, aldehyde, and ketone groups.

Synthesis of Heteroannulated Indolopyrazines through Domino N-H Palladium-Catalyzed/Metal-Free Oxidative C-H Bond Activation.

Project description:A convenient approach to [1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3',4':5,6]pyrazino[2,3-b]indoles and their heteroannulated analogues bearing various aryl substituents in the backbone has been developed. This synthetic protocol is based on Pd-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig and subsequent annulation by intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation. The photophysical properties for new polycycles have been measured.

Palladium catalyzed regioselective B-C(sp) coupling via direct cage B-H activation: synthesis of B(4)-alkynylated o-carboranes.

Project description:Pd-catalyzed carboxylic acid guided regioselective alkynylation of cage B(4)-H bonds in o-carboranes has been achieved for the first time using two different catalytic systems. In the presence of 5 mol% Pd(OAc)2 and 3 equiv. of AgOAc, the reaction of 1-COOH-2-R1-C2B10H10 with R3SiC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CBr in ClCH2CH2Cl gives 4-(R3SiC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)-2-R1-o-C2B10H10 in moderate to high yields. This reaction is compatible with alkynes possessing sterically bulky silyl groups such as iPr3Si or t BuMe2Si. Meanwhile, another catalytic system of Pd(OAc)2/AgOAc/K2HPO4 can catalyze the direct B(4)-alkynylation of 1-COOH-2-R1-C2B10H10 with terminal alkynes R2C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH in moderate to high yields. The latter has a broader substrate scope from bulky silyl to aromatic to carboranyl substituents. Desilylation of the resultant products affords carboranyl acetylene 4-(HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)-2-R1-o-C2B10H10 which can undergo further transformations such as Sonogashira coupling, dimerization and click reactions. It is suggested that the above two catalytic systems may proceed via Pd(ii)-Pd(iv)-Pd(ii) and Pd(ii)-Pd(0)-Pd(ii) catalytic cycles, respectively. In addition, the silver salt is found to promote the decarboxylation reaction and thereby controls the mono-selectivity.

Project description:The synthesis of a new C3v -symmetric crushed fullerene C60H24 (5) has been accomplished in three steps from truxene through sixfold palladium-catalyzed intramolecular arylation of a syn-trialkylated truxene precursor. Laser irradiation of 5 induces cyclodehydrogenation processes that result in the formation of C60, as detected by LDI-MS.

Project description:We report herein a two or three step synthesis of fluorinated π-conjugated oligomers through iterative C-H bond arylations. Palladium-catalyzed desulfitative arylation of heteroarenes allowed in a first step the synthesis of fluoroaryl-heteroarene units in high yields. Then, the next steps involve direct arylation with aryl bromides catalyzed by PdCl(C3H5)(dppb) to afford triad or tetrad heteroaromatic compounds via regioselective activation of C(sp(2))-H bonds.

Palladium(II)-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp³)-H activation using a chiral hydroxamic acid ligand.

Project description:An enantioselective method for Pd(II)-catalyzed cross-coupling of methylene β-C(sp(3))-H bonds in cyclobutanecarboxylic acid derivatives with arylboron reagents is described. High yields and enantioselectivities were achieved through the development of chiral mono-N-protected α-amino-O-methylhydroxamic acid (MPAHA) ligands, which form a chiral complex with the Pd(II) center. This reaction provides an alternative approach to the enantioselective synthesis of cyclobutanecarboxylates containing α-chiral quaternary stereocenters. This new class of chiral catalysts also show promises for enantioselective β-C(sp(3))-H activation of acyclic amides.

Palladium-catalyzed allene synthesis enabled by β-hydrogen elimination from sp<sup>2</sup>-carbon.

Project description:The rational design based on a deep understanding of the present reaction mechanism is an important, viable approach to discover new organic transformations. β-Hydrogen elimination from palladium complexes is a fundamental reaction in palladium catalysis. Normally, the eliminated β-hydrogen has to be attached to a sp3-carbon. We envision that the hydrogen elimination from sp2-carbon is possible by using thoroughly designed reaction systems, which may offer a new strategy for the preparation of allenes. Here, we describe a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of 2,2-diarylvinyl bromides and diazo compounds, where a β-vinylic hydrogen elimination from allylic palladium intermediate is proposed to be the key step. Both aryl diazo carbonyl compounds and N-tosylhydrazones are competent carbene precursors in this reaction. The reaction mechanism is explored by control experiments, KIE studies and DFT calculations.
