Determination of the Raman polarizability tensor in the optically anisotropic crystal potassium dihydrogen phosphate and its deuterated analog.

ABSTRACT: The Raman tensor of the dominant A₁ modes of the nonlinear optical crystalline material potassium dihydrogen phosphate and its 70% deuterated analog have been ascertained. Challenges in determining the A₁ mode tensor element values based on previous reports have been resolved using a specially designed experimental setup that makes use of spherical crystal samples. This novel experimental design enabled the determination of measurement artifacts, including polarization rotation of the pump and/or scattered light propagating through the sample and the contribution of additional overlapping phonon modes, which have hindered previous efforts. Results confirmed that the polarization tensor is diagonal, and matrix elements were determined with high accuracy.

Project description:Deuterated potassium orthophosphate hepta-hydrate, K3PO4·7D2O, crystallizes in the Sohnke space group P21, and its absolute structure was determined from 2017 Friedel pairs [Flack parameter 0.004 (16)]. Each of the three crystallographically unique K+ cations is surrounded by six water mol-ecules and one oxygen atom from the orthophosphate group, using a threshold for K-O bonds of 3.10 Å. The highly irregular coordination polyhedra are linked by corner- and edge-sharing into a three-dimensional network that is consolidated by an intricate network of O-D⋯O hydrogen bonds of medium strength.

Project description:In the cystal structure of the title compound, (2-hy-droxy-ethyl)trimethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate, C(5)H(14)NO(+)·H(2)PO(4) (-), two anions create dimeric structures via two O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen-bonded dimers are connected by another O-H⋯O hydrogen bond with the hydroxyl groups of the cations, constructing a columner structure along the a axis. A number of C-H⋯O interactions are also present.

Project description:The title compounds, 2-chloroanilinium dihydrogen phosphate (2CADHP) and 4-chloroanilinium dihydrogen phosphate (4CADHP), both C(6)H(7)NCl(+) x H(2)PO(4)(-), form two-dimensional supramolecular organic-inorganic hybrid frameworks. In 2CADHP, the dihydrogen phosphate anions form a double-stranded anionic chain generated parallel to the [010] direction through O-H...O hydrogen bonds, whereas in 4CADHP they form a two-dimensional supramolecular net extending parallel to the crystallographic (001) plane into which the cations are linked through strong N-H...O hydrogen bonds.

Multiple pathways of crystal nucleation in an extremely supersaturated aqueous potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) solution droplet.

Project description:Solution studies have proposed that crystal nucleation can take more complex pathways than previously expected in classical nucleation theory, such as formation of prenucleation clusters or densified amorphous/liquid phases. These findings show that it is possible to separate fluctuations in the different order parameters governing crystal nucleation, that is, density and structure. However, a direct observation of the multipathways from aqueous solutions remains a great challenge because heterogeneous nucleation sites, such as container walls, can prevent these paths. Here, we demonstrate the existence of multiple pathways of nucleation in highly supersaturated aqueous KH2PO4 (KDP) solution using the combination of a containerless device (electrostatic levitation), and in situ micro-Raman and synchrotron X-ray scattering. Specifically, we find that, at an unprecedentedly deep level of supersaturation, a high-concentration KDP solution first transforms into a metastable crystal before reaching stability at room temperature. However, a low-concentration solution, with different local structures, directly transforms into the stable crystal phase. These apparent multiple pathways of crystallization depend on the degree of supersaturation.

Tomato and Pepper Leaf Parts Contribute Differently to the Absorption of Foliar-Applied Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate.

Project description:Foliar fertilisation is an application technique that is increasingly being used in agriculture and offers the possibility of providing nutrients directly to the site of highest demand. Especially for phosphorus (P), foliar application is an interesting alternative to soil fertilisation, but foliar uptake mechanisms are poorly understood. To gain a better understanding of the importance of leaf surface features for foliar P uptake, we conducted a study with tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants, which have different leaf surface traits. For this purpose, drops of 200 mM KH2PO4 without surfactant were applied onto the adaxial or abaxial leaf side or to the leaf veins and the rate of foliar P absorption was evaluated after one day. Additionally, leaf surfaces were characterised in detail by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), estimating also leaf surface wettability and free energy, among other parameters. While the leaves of pepper hardly contained any trichomes, the abaxial side and the leaf veins of tomato leaves were densely covered with trichomes. The cuticle of tomato leaves was thin (approximately 50 nm), while that of pepper was thick (approximately 150-200 nm) and impregnated with lignin. Due to the fact that trichomes were most abundant in the leaf veins of tomato, dry foliar fertiliser drop residues were observed to be anchored there, and the highest P uptake occurred via tomato leaf veins, resulting in 62% increased P concentration. However, in pepper, the highest rate of P absorption was recorded after abaxial-side P treatment (+66% P). Our results provide evidence that different leaf parts contribute unequally to the absorption of foliar-applied agrochemicals, which could potentially be useful for optimising foliar spray treatments in different crops.

Adjacent chains are further connected by N-H?O hydrogen bonds into a two-dimensional network.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(5)H(8)N(3) (+)·H(2)PO(4) (-), N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, involving the unprotonated amino-group and the NH(+) group in the pyridinium ring and dihydrogenphosphate O atoms, link the cations and anions. A long chain-like stacking of dihydrogenphosphate anions along the c-axis direction is constructed by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Also along the c-axis direction, π-π stacking between inversion-related pyridinium rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.8051 (10) Å] forms columnar stacks of cations.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(12)H(12)N(+)·H(2)PO(4) (-), the dihydrogen phosphate anions and the 2-phenyl-anilinium cations are associated via O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds so as to build inorganic layers around the x = 1/2 plane. The organic entities are anchored between these layers through C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional infinite network. The dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is 44.7 (4)°.
