Endowing magnesium with the corrosion-resistance property through cross-linking polymerized inorganic sol-gel coating.

ABSTRACT: The design of a highly adhesive, defect-free and low-temperature sol-gel coating for the protection of magnesium alloys is desirable yet challenging. In this study, a novel SiO₂-based sol-gel coating is developed by a ring-opening addition reaction. Notably, the integration of individual sol clusters endows the sol-gel coating with a smooth and compact surface morphology, and eliminates the potential corrosion site of the low-temperature-prepared sol-gel coating. Besides, the as-obtained sol-gel coating exhibits excellent metallic adhesion nature. Most importantly, it increases the overall impedance modulus by 27 times than that of the conventional strategy and decreases the corrosion rate from 3.8 ± 0.5 mg cm^-2 per day (commercial chromate conversion coating) to 0.5 ± 0.2 mg cm^-2 per day.

Inorganic Sol-Gel Polymerization for Hydrogel Bioprinting.

Project description:An inorganic sol-gel polymerization process was used as a cross-linking reaction during three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of cell-containing hydrogel scaffolds. Hybrid hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), with a controlled ratio of silylation, was prepared and isolated as a 3D-network precursor. When dissolved in a biological buffer containing human mesenchymal stem cells, it yields a bioink that can be printed during polymerization by extrusion. It is worth noting that the sol-gel process proceeded at pH 7.4 using biocompatible mode of catalysis (NaF and glycine). The printing window was determined by rheology and viscosity measurements. The physicochemical properties of hydrogels were studied. Covalent functionalization of the network can be easily performed by adding a triethoxysilyl-containing molecule; a fluorescent hybrid molecule was used as a proof of concept.

Electrochemical data of single and hybrid sol-gel coating precursors for aluminum alloy corrosion protection in 3.5% NaCl.

Project description:The anti-corrosion performances of single(TEOS) and hybrid (APTES-TEOS) sol-gel coatings on Al alloy samples exposed to 3.5 wt% NaCl were evaluated employing electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. The data acquired using the three corrosion analysis techniques were in accordance with each other where hybrid sol-gel coating offered the lowest corrosion rate and current density in comparison to the single precursor silanol coating. Tafel curves suggested that the hybrid silane coatings mitigate both the anodic and cathodic reactions simultaneously (mixed type inhibitor). These techniques justified that incorporation of hybrid sol-gel improved the Al corrosion protection performance considerably.

Experimental data of inorganic gel based smart window using silica sol-gel process.

Project description:In this article experimental data are presented for inorganic gel based smart window fabricated using silica sol-gel process. Parallel beam transmittances were measured as functions of voltages for samples fabricated with different concentrations of nitric acid. Spectroscopic transmittance data at different driving voltages for samples fabricated with different LC concentrations are shown. Transmittance spectra of the Si-Ti based gel-based-liquid-crystal (GDLC) device measured as different driving voltages were compared with those of PDLC. GDLC showed much lower operating voltages, 10-15 V, for on-state. Formation of the LC droplet in gelation process is illustrated. The methyl organic group surrounds LC droplets. Demonstration of GDLC based smart window showed the successful operation with low driving voltages. GDLC window shows clear color, even at off-state, compared with PDLC.

Optimization of Hybrid Sol-Gel Coating for Dropwise Condensation of Pure Steam.

Project description:We developed hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel silica coatings with good durability in harsh environment (high temperatures, high vapor velocities) and with slightly hydrophobic behavior, sufficient to promote dropwise condensation (DWC) of pure steam. DWC is a very promising mechanism in new trends of thermal management and power generation systems to enhance the heat transfer during condensation as compared to film-wise condensation (FWC). The sol-gel coatings have been prepared from methyl triethoxy silane (MTES) and tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) and deposited on an aluminum substrate. The coatings were optimized in terms of precursor ratio and annealing temperature highlighting potentials and limits of such mixtures. A comprehensive surface characterization before and after saturated steam condensation tests has been performed and related to the thermal measurements for evaluating the heat transfer augmentation as compared to FWC obtained on untreated aluminum surfaces. The results showed that the developed hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel silica coatings are promising DWC promoters.

Stable sol-gel hydroxyapatite coating on zirconia dental implant for improved osseointegration.

Project description:Aside from being known for its excellent mechanical properties and aesthetic effect, zirconia has recently attracted attention as a new dental implant material. Many studies have focused on hydroxyapatite (HA) coating for obtaining improved biocompatibility, however the coating stability was reduced by a byproduct produced during the high-temperature sintering process. In this study, to overcome this problem, we simply coated the zirconia surface with a sol-gel-derived hydroxyapatite (HA) layer and then sintered it at a varied temperature (<1000 °C). The surface showed a nanoporous structure, and there was no crystalline phase other than HA and zirconia when the sintering temperature was 800 °C. The adhesion strength of the HA layer (>40 MPa) was also appropriate as a dental implant application. In addition, in vitro cell experiments using a preosteoblast cell line revealed that the HA-coated zirconia surface acts as a preferable surface for cell attachment and proliferation than bare zirconia surface. In vivo animal experiments also demonstrated that the osteoconductivity of zirconia were dramatically enhanced by HA coating, which was comparable to that of Ti implant. These results suggest that the sol-gel-based HA-coated zirconia has a great potential for use as a dental implant material.

Multi-Functional Luminescent Coating for Wood Fabric Based on Silica Sol-Gel Approach.

Project description:Environmentally friendly protection coatings have obtained increasing attention for their use in wooden materials, which can be destroyed easily when exposed to outdoor environments. A series of silane sol coatings coordinated with Eu3+ was prepared by hydrolyzing silane compounds. The obtained luminescent coating with three-dimensional net structure showed excellent optical, anti-ultraviolet aging, and thermal stability. The hybrid silane-modified compound coating was well-distributed on the wood by Si-O bonds to prevent its removal. The compound coating could stave off the decomposition of wood by converting ultraviolet light into red light and a charring action can endow the wood with thermal stability at high temperature, demonstrating the improvement of fire resistance and radiation residence following prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light, proving its excellent anti-ultraviolet aging properties.

Hybrid Sol-Gel Silica Coatings Containing Graphene Nanosheets for Improving the Corrosion Protection of AA2024-T3.

Project description:In the present work, nanostructured graphene nanosheets were added to hybrid silica sols and deposited on aluminium alloy A2024-T3 to study the effect on the corrosion behaviour. Sols were prepared using tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS), 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and a colloidal silica suspension (LUDOX) as silica precursors with adding chemically modified graphene nanosheets (GN-chem). The graphene nanosheets were modified through a straightforward and simple hydrothermal approach and then, dispersed into a silica sol (SiO2/GN-chem). ATR-FTIR was used to optimize the silica sol-gel synthesis and to confirm the cross-linking of the silica network. The corrosion behaviour of the SiO2/GN-chem coatings was also analysed by electrochemical measurement (potentiodynamic polarization) in 0.05 M NaCl solution. The results showed that the incorporation of modified graphene nanosheets into hybrid silica sol-gel coatings affected the corrosion properties of the substrates. An improvement in the corrosion resistance was observed likely due to the enhanced barrier property and hydrophobic behaviour obtained by incorporation of GN-chem and colloidal silica nanoparticles.

Synthesis and thermochromic property studies on W doped VO2 films fabricated by sol-gel method.

Project description:Tungsten-doped VO2 thin films have been synthesized by a modified sol-gel process and followed by a post annealing. Vanadium pentoxide and tungstic acid as raw materials with the addition of hydrogen peroxide, concentrated hydrochloric acid (catalyst) and oxalic acid used as reducing agent were reacted in isobutanol. Finally, the uniform sol of vanadyl oxalate in isobutanol solvent was obtained as precursor. Detailed study suggested that W doped in VO2 introduces additional electron carriers and induces the formation of V3+. Post annealing under vacuum promotes the releasing of chemical stress and generates oxygen vacancies in the samples. Temperature dependent transmittance study revealed that the releasing of chemical stress and deliberately introducing oxygen vacancies in W-doped VO2 films have positive effects on enhancing its switching ability in the infrared transmittance as the metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs. The largest switching of transmittance was obtained about 48% in the infrared range at 43?°C in 1.5%W doped VO2 films, which is significantly larger than the reported ones. The findings in this work open a new way to synthesize the novel and thermochromic W doped VO2 films with facility and low cost. Therefore, it has extensive application to construct smart windows and electronic devices.

Enhancing the Stability of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 by Coating with LiNbO3 Solid-State Electrolyte: Novel Chemically Activated Coating Process versus Sol-Gel Method.

Project description:LiNbO3-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel was fabricated by two methods: using hydrogen-peroxide as activating agent and sol-gel method. The structure of the obtained cathode materials was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the electrochemical properties of the prepared cathodes were probed by charge-discharge studies. The morphology of the coating material on the surface and the degree of coverage of the coated particles were investigated by SEM, which showed that the surface of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 particles is uniformly encapsulated by lithium innovate coating. The influence of the LiNbO3 coating layer on the spinel's properties was explored, including its effect on the crystal structure and electrochemical performance. XRD studies of the obtained coated active materials revealed very small expansion or contraction of the unit cell. From the capacity retention tests a significant improvement of the electrochemical properties resulted when a novel chemically activated coating process was used. Poorer results, however, were obtained using the sol-gel method. The results also revealed that the coated materials by the new method exhibit enhanced reversibility and stability compared to the pristine and reference ones. It was shown that the morphology of the coating material and possible improvement of communication between the substrates play an important role.

Integrating sol-gel and carbon dots chemistry for the fabrication of fluorescent hybrid organic-inorganic films.

Project description:Highly fluorescent blue and green-emitting carbon dots have been designed to be integrated into sol-gel processing of hybrid organic-inorganic materials through surface modification with an organosilane, 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). The carbon dots have been synthesised using citric acid and urea as precursors; the intense fluorescence exhibited by the nanoparticles, among the highest reported in the scientific literature, has been stabilised against quenching by APTES. When the modification is carried out in an aqueous solution, it leads to the formation of silica around the C-dots and an increase of luminescence, but also to the formation of large clusters which do not allow the deposition of optically transparent films. On the contrary, when the C-dots are modified in ethanol, the APTES improves the stability in the precursor sol even if any passivating thin silica shell does not form. Hybrid films containing APTES-functionalized C-dots are transparent with no traces of C-dots aggregation and show an intense luminescence in the blue and green range.
