Phosphoinositides (PIs) are lipid signaling molecules that operate by recruiting proteins to cellular membranes via PI recognition domains. The dominant PI of the plasma membrane is phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PI(4,5)P<sub>2</sub>].
