Project description:The role of commensal birds in the epidemiology of pathogens in poultry farms remains unclear. Our study aimed to identify potential key species for interactions with domestic ducks on one free-range duck farm in southwest France. Methods combined direct individual observations on duck outdoor foraging areas, network analysis, and general linear mixed models of abundances. Results showed a wide diversity of wild bird species visiting foraging areas, heavily dominated in frequency by White wagtails (Motacilla alba) and Sparrows (Passer domesticus and Passer montanus). These also were the only species seen entering duck premises or perching on drinkers in the presence of ducks. Moreover, White wagtails were the species most frequently observed on the ground and in close proximity to ducks. Network analysis suggested the role of White wagtails and Sparrows in linking ducks to other wild birds on the farm. The abundance of White wagtails was positively associated with open vegetation, with the presence of ducks and particularly in the afternoon, while the abundance of Sparrows was positively associated only with the fall-winter season. By precisely characterising interactions, the study was able to identify few wild bird species which should be prioritized in infectious investigations at the interface with poultry.

Preregistered test of whether a virtual nose reduces cybersickness.

Project description:Recent findings suggest that adding a visual depiction of a nose to virtual reality displays (virtual nose) can reduce motion sickness. If so, this would be a simple intervention that could improve the experience of a variety of VR applications. However, only one peer-reviewed study has reported a benefit from a virtual nose, and the effect was observed in a single low-powered experiment. To further test the effectiveness of a virtual nose for mitigating motion sickness in VR, we performed a preregistered experiment with higher power and better control. Subjects were presented with simulated movement in a virtual environment using a head-mounted display, and the resulting motion sickness was measured using the Fast Motion Sickness Scale (FMS) and the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ). Conditions with and without a virtual nose were tested in separate sessions on different days, and the mean habituation effects were removed analytically. Awareness of the manipulation was assessed with a funnel debriefing procedure. The sample size (n = 32) was chosen to have over 90% power to detect the estimated effect size based on previous data (dz = 0.6). We found no significant difference between motion sickness in conditions with and without the virtual nose. The estimated effect size was close to zero, dz = - 0.02, with a 95% credible interval [- 0.37, 0.33]. Results from a Bayesian analysis imply that any benefit from a virtual nose is unlikely to be more than a 26% reduction in FMS scores, and any cost is unlikely to be more than a 23% increase. Our results do not support the hypothesis that a virtual nose is a general and effective way to relieve motion sickness in virtual reality.

De novo transcriptome assemblies of four accessions of the metal hyperaccumulator plant Noccaea caerulescens.

Project description:Noccaea caerulescens of the Brassicaceae family has become the key model plant among the metal hyperaccumulator plants. Populations/accessions of N. caerulescens from geographic locations with different soil metal concentrations differ in their ability to hyperaccumulate and hypertolerate metals. Comparison of transcriptomes in several accessions provides candidates for detailed exploration of the mechanisms of metal accumulation and tolerance and local adaptation. This can have implications in the development of plants for phytoremediation and improved mineral nutrition. Transcriptomes from root and shoot tissues of four N. caerulescens accessions with contrasting Zn, Cd and Ni hyperaccumulation and tolerance traits were sequenced with Illumina Hiseq2000. Transcriptomes were assembled using the Trinity de novo assembler and were annotated and the protein sequences predicted. The comparison against the BUSCO plant early release dataset indicated high-quality assemblies. The predicted protein sequences have been clustered into ortholog groups with closely related species. The data serve as important reference sequences in whole transcriptome studies, in analyses of genetic differences between the accessions and other species, and for primer design.
