Catena-Poly[[diaqua-cadmium(II)]bis-(?-2,2-dimethyl-butane-dioato-?O,O':O'',O''')[diaqua-cadmium(II)]-?-1,4-bis-(3-pyridylmeth-yl)piperazine-?N:N].

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [Cd(2)(C(6)H(8)O(4))(2)(C(16)H(20)N(4))(H(2)O)(4)](n), penta-gonal-bipyramidally coordinated Cd(II) ions are connected into {Cd(2)(2,2-dimethyl-succinate)(2)(H(2)O)(4)} centrosymmetric dimeric clusters. In turn, these clusters are linked by tethering 1,4-bis-(3-pyridylmeth-yl)piperazine (3-bpmp) ligands into [Cd(2)(2,2-dimethyl-succinate)(2)(3-bpmp)(H(2)O)(4)](n) coordination polymer chains. The chain motifs are oriented parallel to [10]. Individual chains are connected into supra-molecular layers via O-H?N and O-H?O hydrogen-bonding mechanisms.

Two citrate ligands bridge two Mn(II) ions, the Mn(II) ion being coordinated by four O atoms from the citrate(2-) ligands and two water O atoms, forming a distorted octa-hedral environment. In the crystal, O-H?O hydrogen bonds link the centrosymmetric dimers and lattice water mol-ecules into a three-dimensional structure which is further stabilized by inter-molecular ?-? inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.792?(2)?Å].

The cation sits on a twofold axis and is six-coordinated in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry; the polyhedra are linked into zigzag chains, which are further connected by N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds as well as π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance of 3.639 (2) Å], giving a three-dimensional supra-molecular framework.

The resulting helical chains extend along the b axis and are inter-connected by extensive O-H?O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, which also involve the water mol-ecule of solvation, giving a three-dimensional structure.

The sulfate anion links with the polymeric chains via O-H?O hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional supra-molecular network.
