The crystal structure of KScP2O7.

ABSTRACT: Single crystals of KScP2O7, potassium scandium diphosphate, were grown in a borate flux. The title compound crystallizes isotypically with KAlP2O7 in space-group type P21/c, Z = 4. The main building block is an {ScP2O11}9- unit, forming layers parallel to (001). These layers are stacked along [001] via common corners of octa-hedral and tetra-hedral units to span up large hepta-gonal cavities that host the potassium cations with a coordination number of 10. The P-O-P bridging angle increases with increasing size of the octa-hedrally coordinated M III cation, as do the K-O distances within a series of KM IIIP2O7 compounds (M III = Al to Y with ionic radii r = 0.538 to 0.90?Å).

Project description:The compound La24Ru11 (tetra-cosa-lanthanum undeca-ruthenium) crystallizes in a Ce24Co11-type structure. The non-centrosymmetric crystal structure (space group P63 mc) contains RuLa6 trigonal prisms, La6 octa-hedra and LaRu4 tetra-hedra and is closely related to that of Ce23Ni7Mg4. This communication highlights the crystal-chemical similarities and points out the differences between the two structures. All of the tested crystals were inversion twins.

Synthesis and crystal structure of NaCuIn(PO4)2.

Project description:Single crystals of sodium copper(II) indium bis-[phosphate(V)], NaCuIn(PO4)2, were grown from the melt under atmospheric conditions. The title phosphate crystallizes in the space group P21/n and is isotypic with KCuFe(PO4)2. In the crystal, two [CuO5] trigonal bipyramids share an edge to form a dimer [Cu2O8] that is connected to two PO4 tetra-hedra. The obtained [Cu2P2O12] units are inter-connected through vertices to form sheets that are sandwiched between undulating layers resulting from the junction of PO4 tetra-hedra and [InO6] octa-hedra. The two types of layers are alternately stacked along [101] and are joined into a three-dimensional framework through vertex- and edge-sharing, leaving channels parallel to the stacking direction. The channels host the sodium cations that are surrounded by four oxygen atoms in form of a distorted disphenoid.

Crystal structure of Zn2(HTeO3)(AsO4).

Project description:Single crystals of Zn2(HTeO3)(AsO4), dizinc(II) hydroxidodioxidotellurate(IV) oxidoarsenate(V), were obtained as one of the by-products in a hydro-thermal reaction between Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, TeO2, H3AsO4 and NH3 in molar ratios of 2:1:2:10 at 483 K for seven days. The asymmetric unit of Zn2(HTeO3)(AsO4) contains one Te (site symmetry m), one As (m), one Zn (1), five O (three m, two 1) and one H (m) site. The ZnII atom exhibits a coordination number of 5 and is coordinated by four oxygen atoms and a hydroxide group, forming a distorted trigonal bipyramid. The hydroxide ion is positioned at a significantly larger distance on one of the axial positions of the bipyramid. The [ZnO4OH] polyhedra are connected to each other by corner-sharing to form ∞ 2[ZnO3/2(OH)1/2O1/1] layers extending parallel to (001). The TeIV atom is coordinated by three oxygen atoms and a hydroxide group in a one-sided manner in the shape of a bis-phenoid, revealing stereochemical activity of its 5s 2 electron lone pair. The AsV atom is coordinated by four oxygen atoms to form the tetra-hedral oxidoarsenate(V) anion. By corner-sharing, [TeO3OH] and [AsO4] groups link adjacent ∞ 2[ZnO3/2(OH)1/2O1/1] layers along [001] into a three-dimensional framework structure.

Crystal structure of Li3Ga(BO3)2.

Project description:The crystal structure of trilithium gallium bis-(orthoborate), Li3Ga(BO3)2, is isotypic with Li3Al(BO3)2 in a triclinic cell in space-group type P-1. The three Li and the unique Ga atom are coordinated by four O atoms each in tetra-hedra, and the two B atoms are coordinated by three O atoms in orthoborate triangles. Chains with composition [Ga2(BO3)4]6- extend along the a axis. The Li atoms inter-leave these chains in tetra-hedral inter-stices. A comparison is made between the structure model of the title compound and that of a previously reported model for a compound with the same composition [Abdullaev & Mamedov (1972 ▸). Zh. Strukt. Crystal structure of Ba2Co(BO3)2.

Project description:Single crystals of dibarium cobalt(II) bis-(orthoborate), Ba2Co(BO3)2, have been obtained from the melt. The crystal structure is composed of two isolated (BO3)3- triangles linked to Co2+ cations. The resulting [CoO5] square pyramids and the borate anions make up branched rows extending parallel to [010]. The barium cations occupy two sites in the voids of this arrangement and exhibit coordination numbers of nine each. A comparison with the structures of other A 2 M(BO3)2 compounds reveals a unique five-coordination of the small metal M in the title compound instead of four- or six-coordination for the other A 2 M(BO3)2 compounds with M = Cu, Zn, Mg, Ca, or Cd.

Crystal structure of the M5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor.

Project description:The human M5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) has recently emerged as an exciting therapeutic target for treating a range of disorders, including drug addiction. However, a lack of structural information for this receptor subtype has limited further drug development and validation. Here we report a high-resolution crystal structure of the human M5 mAChR bound to the clinically used inverse agonist, tiotropium. This structure allowed for a comparison across all 5 mAChR family members that revealed important differences in both orthosteric and allosteric sites that could inform the rational design of selective ligands. These structural studies, together with chimeric swaps between the extracellular regions of the M2 and M5 mAChRs, provided structural insight into kinetic selectivity, where ligands show differential residency times between related family members. Collectively, our study provides important insights into the nature of orthosteric and allosteric ligand interaction across the mAChR family that could be exploited for the design of selective drugs.

Crystal Structure of the Human Cannabinoid Receptor CB1.

Project description:Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) is the principal target of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive chemical from Cannabis sativa with a wide range of therapeutic applications and a long history of recreational use. CB1 is activated by endocannabinoids and is a promising therapeutic target for pain management, inflammation, obesity, and substance abuse disorders. Here, we present the 2.8 Å crystal structure of human CB1 in complex with AM6538, a stabilizing antagonist, synthesized and characterized for this structural study. The structure of the CB1-AM6538 complex reveals key features of the receptor and critical interactions for antagonist binding. In combination with functional studies and molecular modeling, the structure provides insight into the binding mode of naturally occurring CB1 ligands, such as THC, and synthetic cannabinoids. This enhances our understanding of the molecular basis for the physiological functions of CB1 and provides new opportunities for the design of next-generation CB1-targeting pharmaceuticals.

Crystal structure of chain silicate Cs3LuSi3O9.

Project description:A caesium lutetium(III) silicate, Cs3LuSi3O9, was synthesized by heating a pelletized mixture of Cs2CO3, Lu2O3 and SiO2 at 1273 K. Single crystals of the title compound were grown in a melted area of the pellet. Cs3LuSi3O9 is a single-chain silicate (ortho-rhom-bic space group Pna21) with a chain periodicity of six and is isostructural with Cs3 RE IIIGe3O9 (RE = Pr, Nd and Sm-Yb). The two symmetry-dependent [Si6O18]12- chains in the unit cell lie parallel to the [011] direction. The Lu3+ ions are octa-hedrally coordinated by O atoms of the silicate chains, generating a three-dimensional framework. Cs+ ions are located in the voids in the framework.

Redetermination of the crystal structure of K2Hg(SCN)4.

Project description:Single crystals of K2Hg(SCN)4 [dipotassium tetra-thio-cyanato-mercurate(II)] were grown from aqueous solutions of potassium thio-cyanate and mercury(II) thio-cyanate and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In comparison with the previously reported structure model [Zvonkova (1952 ?). Zh. Fiz. Khim. 26, 1798-1803], all atoms in the crystal structure were located, with lattice parameters and fractional coordinates determined to a much higher precision. In the (crystal) structure, the HgII atom is located on a twofold rotation axis and is coordinated in the form of a distorted tetra-hedron by four S atoms of the thio-cyanate anions. The K+ cation shows a coordination number of eight.

Crystal Structure and Magnetism of Noncentrosymmetric Eu2Pd2Sn.

Project description:The new intermetallic compound Eu2Pd2Sn has been investigated. A single crystal was selected from the alloy and was analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing that this compound possesses the noncentrosymmetric Ca2Pd2Ge structure type being, so far, the only rare-earth-based representative. Bonding analysis, performed on the basis of DOS and (I)COHP, reveals the presence of strong covalent Sn-Pd bonds in addition to linear and equidistant Pd-Pd chains. The incomplete ionization of Eu leads to its participation in weaker covalent interactions. The magnetic effective moment, extracted from the magnetic susceptibility χ(T) is μeff = 7.87 μB, close to the free ion Eu2+ value (μeff = 7.94 μB). The maximum of χ(T) at TN ∼ 13 K indicates an antiferromagnetic behavior below this temperature. A coincident sharp anomaly in the specific heat CP(T) emerges from a broad anomaly centered at around 10 K. From the reduced jump in the heat capacity at TN a scenario of a transition to an incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase below TN followed by a commensurate configuration below 10 K is suggested.
