(Carbonato-?(2)O,O')bis-(5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl-?(2)N,N')cobalt(III) bromide trihydrate.

ABSTRACT: In the title complex, [Co(CO(3))(C(12)H(12)N(2))(2)]Br·3H(2)O, the Co(III) cation has a distorted octa-hedral coordination environment. It is chelated by four N atoms of two different 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (dmbpy) ligands in axial and equatorial positions, and by two O atoms of a carbonate anion completing the equatorial positions. Although the water mol-ecules are disordered and their H atoms were not located, there are typical O?O distances between 2.8 and 3.0?Å, indicating O-H?O hydrogen bonding. The crystal packing is consolidated by C-H?O and C-H?Br hydrogen bonds, as well as ?-? stacking inter-actions between adjacent pyridine rings of the dmbpy ligands, with centroid-centroid distances of 3.694?(3) and 3.7053?(3)?Å.

The solvent water mol-ecule and one methyl group of the dmbpy ligand are disordered over two sets of sites in a 1:1 ratio. Project description:In the title compound, [Co(CO(3))(C(10)H(9)N(3))(2)]Br, a distorted octa-hedral coordination of the Co(III) atom is completed by four N atoms of the two chelating di-2-pyridyl-amine ligands and two O atoms of the chelating carbonate anion. The di-2-pyridyl-amine ligands are nonplanar and the dihedral angles between the 2-pyridyl groups are 29.11?(9) and 37.15?(12)°. The coordination cation, which has approximate C(2) symmetry, is connected to the bromide ion via an N-H?Br(-) hydrogen bond. The ionic pair thus formed is further assembled into a dimer via N-H?O inter-actions about an inversion centre. A set of weaker C-H?O and C-H?Br(-) inter-actions connect the dimers into a three-dimensional network.

Project description:In the title compound, [Co(C(4)N(3))(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2)O(2))]·2H(2)O, a novel tricyano-methanide complex, the Co(II) atom is located on an inversion center and has a distorted octa-hedral coordination with two 2,2'-bipyridyl dioxide (dpdo) mol-ecules and two trans tricyano-methanide (tcm) anions. The equatorial plane is formed by the four O atoms of the two chelating dpdo ligands, with one N atom of each of the two tcm ligands occupying an apical position. There is a disordered solvent water mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit (occupancy ratio 0.63:0.37). These water mol-ecules result in the formation of O-H?O and O-H?N hydrogen bonds, building a layer parallel to (100). The layers are linked by C-H?N hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, leading to a three-dimensional network.

Project description:The title compound, [Cu(2)(C(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(4)](ClO(4))(2)·2C(3)H(7)NO·H(2)O, contains doubly charged centrosymmetric dinuclear oxalato-bridged copper(II) complex cations, perchlorate anions, and DMF and water solvate mol-ecules. In the complex cation, the oxalate ligand is coordinated in a bis-bidentate bridging mode to the Cu atoms. Each Cu atom has a distorted tetra-gonal-bipyramidal environment, being coordinated by two N atoms of the two chelating bipy ligands and two O atoms of the doubly deprotonated oxalate anion. Pairs of perchlorate anions and water mol-ecules are linked into recta-ngles by O-H?O bonds in which the perchlorate O atoms act as acceptors and the water mol-ecules as donors. Methyl groups of the DMF solvent molecule are disordered over two sites with occupancies of 0.453?(7):0.547?(7), and the water molecule is half-occupied.

In the cation, the Au(III) atom is four-coordinated in a distorted square-planar arrangement by an N,N'-bidentate 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligand and two terminal Cl atoms. In the [AuCl(4)](-) anion, the centrosymmetric Au(III) atom has a square-planar coordination. The centrosymmetric [AuCl(2)](-) anion is linear. Intra- and inter-molecular C-H?Cl hydrogen bonds help to establish the conformation and packing.

The ovicidal, larvacidal and adulticidal properties of 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl against Drosophila melanogaster.

Project description:Insecticide resistance has limited the number of available chemical options for insect pest control. Hence there is a need for new chemistries with novel modes of action. Here we investigate the mode of action for an insecticide that has not yet been released for commercial use. The ovicidal, larvacidal and adulticidal effects of 5,5'-dimethyl -2, 2'-dipyridyl (termed Ha44), which is being developed as a treatment for head lice, were evaluated in the Drosophila melanogaster model system. Ha44 demonstrated significant activity against embryos and was capable of arresting development at a number of stages of embryogenesis. The effects of Ha44 on embryos was shown to be reversible following the addition of the metal ions Fe(II) and Fe(III), Cu and Zn. When larvae were exposed to Ha44, lethality was recorded at similar concentrations to those observed for embryos. Using an eYFP reporter system it was shown that Ha44 was able to reduce the levels of both copper and zinc in the digestive tract, confirming the binding of Ha44 to these metals in vivo. Ha44 has further been shown to inhibit a zinc containing metalloproteinase in vitro. Exposure of adult flies to Ha44 resulted in lethality, but at higher concentrations than those observed for embryos and larvae. The median lethal dose in adult flies was shown to be associated with the type of exposure, with an LD-50 of 1.57 mM being recorded following the direct contact of flies with Ha44, while an LD-50 of 12.29 mM was recorded following the ingestion of the compound. The capacity of Ha44 to act on all stages of the life-cycle and potentially via a range of targets suggests that target site resistance is unlikely to evolve.
