ABSTRACT: The title complex, [CrF(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)]ClO(4)·H(2)O, displays a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry around the central chromium(III) ion. The Cr environment is composed of a cis arrangement of two 1,10-phenanthroline [average Cr(III)-N = 2.0726?(10)?Å] and two fluoride [average Cr(III)-F = 1.8533?(6)?Å] ligands. The water molecule forms a hydrogen bond to fluorine in a neighbouring cation.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, [CrCl(C12H8N2)2(H2O)][ZnCl4]·H2O, has been determined from synchrotron data. The Cr(III) ion is bonded to four N atoms from two 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands, one water mol-ecule and a Cl atom in a cis arrangement, displaying an overall distorted octa-hedral coordination environment. The Cr-N(phen) bond lengths are in the range of 2.0495 (18) to 2.0831 (18) Å, while the Cr-Cl and Cr-(OH2) bond lengths are 2.2734 (7) and 1.9986 (17) Å, respectively. The tetra-hedral [ZnCl4](2-) anion is slightly distorted owing to its involvement in O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonding with coordinating and non-coordinating water mol-ecules. The two types of water mol-ecules also inter-act through O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The observed hydrogen-bonding pattern leads to the formation of a three-dimensional network structure.

Project description:Single crystals of the title heterometallic compound, [Fe(C(12)H(8)N(2))(3)][Cr(NCS)(4)(C(12)H(8)N(2))](2)·3CH(3)CN·H(2)O or [Fe(Cphen)(3)][Cr(NCS)(4)(phen)](2)·3CH(3)CN·H(2)O, were pre-pared using the one-pot open-air reaction of iron powder, Reineckes salt and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in acetonitrile. The asymetric unit consists of an [Fe(phen)(3)](2+) cation, two [Cr(phen)(NCS)(4)](-) anions, three acetonitrile solvent mol-ecules and a water mol-ecule. The Fe and Cr atoms both show a slightly distorted octa-hedral FeN(6) and CrN(6) coordination geometry with adjacent angles in the range 79.67?(12)-95.21?(12)°. No classical hydrogen bonding involving the water molecule is observed.

Project description:In the title complex, [PtCl(4)(C(12)H(8)N(2))]·H(2)O, the Pt(4+) ion is six-coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral environment by two N atoms of a 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and by four Cl atoms. As a result of the different trans effects of the N and Cl atoms, the Pt-Cl bonds trans to the N atom are slightly shorter than those trans to the Cl atom. The compound displays inter-molecular ?-? inter-actions between the six-membered rings, with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.834?Å. There are also weak intra-molecular C-H?Cl hydrogen bonds. According to the IR spectrum, solvent water was present in the crystal, but owing to the high thermal motion of the uncoordinated O atom, the H atoms could not be detected.

Project description:In the title compound, [Co(C(9)H(8)NO(3))(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)(H(2)O)]NO(3)·H(2)O, the Co(II) atom is six-coordinated by a carboxylate O atom of the hippurate (Hc) anion, a water O atom and four N atoms from two 1,10-phenanthroline ligands in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The uncoordinated O atom of the hippuric acid anion is involved in an intra-molecular hydrogen bond to the coordinated water mol-ecule. The crystal packing is stabilized by inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the Hc anions, the coordinated water mol-ecule, the nitrate anion and the uncoordinated water mol-ecule.

Understanding the Role of Water in 1,10-Phenanthroline Monohydrate.

Project description:The solid forms emerging from an experimental screening programme of 1,10-phenanthroline (o-phen), a heavily used bidentate ligand, and interconversion pathways of its two neat forms, the monohdyrate (Hy1) and four solvates with acetone, chloroform, dichloromethane and 1,2-dichloroethane are described. The solvates, identified and characterised with thermoanalyical methods, are unstable when removed from the mother liquor and desolvate at room temperature depending on the relative humidity (RH) to anhydrate I° (AH I°) or transform to Hy1. At ambient conditions Hy1, a stoichiometric channel hydrate, is the thermodynaically most stable o-phen solid form. The enthalpically stabilised Hy1 melts at 102 °C or dehydrates to AH I° at RH < 10% at 25 °C. The potential energy difference between Hy1 and AH I° was calculated to be approx. 15 kJ mol-1. The second anhydrate polymorph (AH II) can be obatined from the quench cooled melt of o-phen, but is unstable at ambient conditions and transforms wihtin minutes to either AH I° or Hy1. The two neat polymorphs are enantiotropically related and water-free o-phen transforms to Hy1 at RH > 16%. The structural and stablity features of the solid forms, in paricular Hy1, are unravelled by a combination of experimental (thermal analysis, moisture sorption/desorption and storage experiments, infrared spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction) and computational modelling (crystal structure prediction and lattice energy calculations), providing a consistent picture why o-phen forms a very stable Z' = 3 channel hydrate.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Pt(CH(3)CN)(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))](ClO(4))(2), contains one half of a cationic Pt(II) complex and pair of half perchlorate anions, one of which is disordered over two sites in a 0.53?(3):0.47?(3) ratio. The complex and anions are disposed about a crystallographic mirror plane parallel to the ac plane passing through the Pt and Cl atoms. In the complex, the Pt(II) ion lies in a distorted square-planar environment defined by four N atoms of the chelating 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and two distinct acetonitrile mol-ecules. The component ions inter-act by means of inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds.
