ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [Zn(C(8)H(8)N(3)S(2))(2)], the Zn atom is coordinated by the two ligands in a tridentate manner, via the pyridyl N, the azomethine N and the thiol-ate S atom; the coordination geometry is distorted octa-hedral, with the two ligands in the mer configuration (two S atoms and two pyridyl N atoms are cis with respect to each other and the azomethine N atoms is trans). The mol-ecules are linked by C-H?S hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network structure.

It exists in a tetra-hedral geometry, chelated by two deprotonated Schiff base ligands. The dihedral angle between each ligand is 71.48?(8)°. Mol-ecules are connected by weak C-H?S inter-molecular inter-actions into chains along the c axis. The crystal structure is further stabilized by C-H?? inter-actions involving the phenyl ring of the 3-phenyl-prop-2-enyl-idene unit.

The Ni(II) atom is N,S-chelated by two hydrazinecarbodithio-ate ligands, which provide an N(2)S(2) donor set that defines a distorted square-planar geometry, the S atoms being approximately cis. The conformation of the chelate ring is an envelope with the Ni(II) atom being the flap atom. The dihedral angle between the least-squares planes through the chelate rings = 30.10?(6)°. Supra-molecular chains propagated by glide symmetry along the c axis and mediated by C-H?N contacts feature in the crystal packing.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, (C(13)H(11)Cl(2)N(2))(2)[Ni(C(4)N(2)S(2))(2)], contains one-half of a centrosymmetric [Ni(mnt)(2)] anion (where mnt is maleonitrile-dithiol-ate or 1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethyl-enedithiol-ate) and an (E)-1-(3,4-dichloro-benzyl-ideneamino)-4-methyl-pyridinium cation. In the anion, the coordination around the Ni atom is a distorted square. In the cation, the aromatic rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 7.81?(3)°. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular C-H?N hydrogen bonds link the cations and anions. ?-? Contacts between the nickel dithiol-ene and pyridine rings and between the benzene and pyridine rings, [centroid-centroid distances = 3.682?(3) and 3.643?(3)?Å, respectively] may further stabilize the structure.
